Monster Attack Team began in the early 1990s as a fan club for aficionados of Japanese science fiction and fantasy. It was originally organized by Edward 'Edzilla' Holland and 'Ultra' Joe Riley with the intention of bringing together as many fans of the genre as possible. They borrowed the MAT moniker from the kaiju-fighting taskforce in the 1971 Tsuburaya series RETURN OF ULTRAMAN. It quickly morphed into both a cable access television show and a small magazine.
Seven episodes of the TV show were produced in Dallas, Texas, featuring Ed and Joe talking about the latest tokusatsu films, television programs, toys and paraphernalia, while showing exciting clips of the same. They visited locations such as a local Japanese grocery store and the State Fair of Texas to spread the word about Japanese monsters and super heros. This was the first chance many had to witness the insanity of SPECTREMAN or be wowed by the Japanese rock band SEIKIMA II. The show was influential enough to spawn a 'sequel' series called ALIEN DEATH SQUAD, which featured more of the same plus anime, music and various aspects of fringe culture.
The MAT magazine also lasted seven issues. It started as a small newsletter and blossomed into a full-blown Japanese monster funbag - joining the ranks of similar themed zines such as G-FAN, KAIJU REVIEW and ORIENTAL CINEMA. During its time, Ed Holland was assisted in his editorial role by David May and then Michael Keller, and ran articles by genre luminaries such as August Ragone, Kip Doto, Damon Foster and Ed Godziszewski.
2010 sees the dawn of a new era for MAT - with a new issue poised to hit the presses this December of '09. The new magazine will display both a visual and contextual level of quality not reached by such a publication since the glory days of THE JAPANESE FANTASY FILM JOURNAL and MARKALITE. We invite you along for the ride to share the glory of the magnificent beasts from the east and the fantastic far eastern heros who fight them one more time...
